Hockey facilities at Hailsham Community College will be improved after Wealden District Council agreed to fund up to £216,406 towards improvements.

The works will comprise of improvements to be made to the sand-based artificial grass pitch, used for competition hockey at the college, and replacement of the flood lights with energy saving ultra-low glare LED floodlights – estimated to save £7,900 in utility costs and 2.6kw of electricity per annum. The total project cost is £291,406.

By working in partnership with Hailsham Community College, Hailsham Hockey Club, and Hailsham Town Council, Wealden’s Full Council agreed to provide the funding to improve and protect the existing pitch at this site, safeguarding the future of hockey in the south of the district, and ensuring these multi-sport facilities remain available for both the school and public use for years to come.

This funding is in addition to £311,000 being previously agreed in 2023 to improve the hockey pitch at Beacon Academy, Crowborough, in the north of the district.

Funding is being made available from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) monies and will help improve the quality, accessibility, and protection of community-use sports facilities at educational sites.

Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden and Wellbeing and Asset Management Portfolio Holder said “The health and wellbeing of our residents is pivotal to them living happier, more fulfilled, and heathier lives.

“The provision of high quality, local sports provision and open spaces enables residents to access opportunities to adopt healthier lifestyles through physical activity, and actively being involved in their community.

“By working with and supporting local partners and communities we are able to strengthen local relationships and build healthy, resilient communities. This funding will help to improve accessibility and the sports facilities located at Hailsham Community College”.
