About the area
Where is Wealden?
If you’re asking then you’re already missing out! The easy answer is Wealden is a predominantly rural district in East Sussex that covers an area of 323 square miles.
But Wealden is so much more; named after the Weald, a historic term for a wooded area that stretches across south-east England is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the country, from rolling hills and forests to chalk cliffs and sandy beaches.
Wealden is rich in history and culture, with many attractions and landmarks that showcase its heritage. Some of the highlights include:
- The Ashdown Forest, a former royal hunting ground and the setting for Winnie-the-Pooh stories by A.A. Milne.
- The Long Man of Wilmington, a mysterious figure carved into the hillside that dates back to the Iron Age or earlier.
- The Seven Sisters, a series of stunning white cliffs along the coast that offer breathtaking views of the English Channel.
- Pevensey Castle, a Roman fort that was later used by William the Conqueror and King Henry VIII.
- Herstmonceux Castle, a 15th-century moated castle that now houses an observatory and a science centre.
Wealden is a place that has something for everyone, whether you are looking for nature, history, or culture.
