Building New Council Homes

Changes in housing law have given Wealden District Council the opportunity to deliver new Council homes for rent or affordable home ownership. These changes were the result of the Localism Act (2011),  which allows the Council to keep the rental income from our Council homes and invest it in new homes for local people.

To date, we have built 283 new homes to rent or purchase on a shared ownership basis across the district. This includes a new Retirement Living Scheme of 67 flats to rent. We have also purchased and refurbished a further 48 homes across the district making a total of 331 homes.

Of the 331 Council homes that have been provided since 2011, 315 are rented properties and the remaining 16 are shared ownership homes (part rent/part buy).

We are due to complete 25 new homes in Crowborough (20 rent and 5 shared ownership) at the end of 2024 and 20 homes (18 rent and 2 shared ownership) in Uckfield in Spring/Summer 2025.
