A new health centre and community hall in Mayfield takes steps forward thanks to funding

Baxall Construction Limited is a local contractor with experience in delivering community, medical and leisure projects, and design and build solutions in London and the southeast area, making the Kent company a perfect fit for the Mayfield project.

The project to build a new community hall and health centre is being undertaken in partnership between Wealden District Council and Mayfield & Five Ashes Parish Council, who own the land the medical centre will be built upon.

The delivery of a purpose-built health centre, incorporating four GP consulting rooms, three treatment rooms, patient waiting room and ancillary spaces located with a multi-purpose community hall, comprising a community hub, office space and flexible meeting rooms, will provide the residents of Mayfield and Five Ashes with improved medical and village facilities.

Wealden District Council has secured £150,000 of One Public Estate funding which was awarded earlier this year.  Mayfield and Five Ashes Parish Council is also pursuing grant possibilities.

Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat), and lead councillor for Public Health, Wellbeing and Asset Management, said, “We are happy that extra funding has been acquired as it will improve the financial resilience for the project given the difficult economic situation nationally. We look forward to welcoming Baxall Construction Limited to the project and seeing this much needed community facility progress over the coming year.”

Ian Parker, chairman of Mayfield & Five Ashes Parish Council, said, “We are delighted that the project is now underway and look forward to working with our Wealden District Council partner and Baxall Construction Limited with a view to seeing the project completed at the earliest opportunity. The combined community hall and health centre is a much needed and eagerly awaited facility for our community.”

Andrew Cornell, managing partner of Ashdown Medical Group, said, “The Partners are delighted to hear extra funding has been awarded in support of the project and ever more hopeful our new surgery is on the horizon, which will secure GP services for many years to come.  Without a new premises, we are concerned about our future, simply because we do not have suitable premises or infrastructure to support our patients or indeed what the NHS expect going forward.  This extra funding is a giant step forward which we hope will progress the project to the next stage.

A spokesperson for NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board, said, “This is great news for the residents of Mayfield and Five Ashes. We are pleased to see the project continue to progress and this is another step forward in the further improvement of GP services in the area. The new facility will enable GP practice teams to deliver a higher quality of healthcare in a setting that is equipped for modern medicine which also includes a range of other services for the community.”
