Cycle repair stations on Cuckoo Trail

Cycle tools recently stolen from along the Cuckoo Trail, on the outskirts of Heathfield, have been replaced by Wealden District Council.
Two new bike repair stations, consisting of giant air pumps and a stand with a series of tools including tyre levers, screw drivers and allen keys, were recently installed in the Polegate and Heathfield areas.
The cycle stations allow for minor repairs to be made to bikes so that visitors can easily and safely cycle along the Cuckoo Trail.
However, shortly after the new stations were installed, the tools were cut off and stolen from the Heathfield location. The cost to replace and fit the tools is more than £200.
Residents and visitors using the Cuckoo Trail are asked to report any vandalism or anti-social behaviour seen along the Cuckoo Trail to the police.
Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Public Health, Wellbeing and Asset Management said, “We are working with the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to make significant improvements to the Cuckoo Trail. It is very sad when the mindless behaviour of a few people, has such a detrimental and damaging impact on the safety and enjoyment of others.
“The council remains committed to improving the Cuckoo Trail, which is such a valuable asset for our district. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the Cuckoo Trail continues to be a wonderful place to visit, where we can be close to nature, can spend time with friends and family and get the many physical and wellbeing benefits from being outdoors.”

The installation of bike repair stations is part of an improvement programme to the Cuckoo Trail, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Enhancements include improving the accessibility of the picnic area near Heathfield, new signage and wayfinding, replacement of many of the benches, new outdoor gym equipment installed along the stretch near Summer Hill Lane, a Horam Hub and the delivery of ‘Arts and Heritage’ and ‘Volunteering and Wellness’ programmes.
