“On Saturday 1 December, it is Small Business Saturday,” said Councillor Roy Galley, Wealden Cabinet member for Economic Development. “It is a great opportunity to support the small shops and businesses that make up the backbone of the Wealden economy. Christmas is fast approaching. There will be many opportunities at our local Farmers’ Markets and Christmas Fairs to buy produce and presents from these great local suppliers.”

There are events taking place in Mayfield, Blackham, Forest Row, Uckfield, Heathfield, Hooe, Hailsham, East Dean, Willingdon, Waldron, and Framfield,

“The District’s rich agricultural heritage is fostering both traditional and exciting new businesses. This is particularly so when it comes to drink. We have seen a growth in the number of vineyards planted up across the District and these are gaining widespread recognition for the wines they are producing,” added Councillor Galley.

Among the Sussex Food and Drink finalists to look out for are Five Ashes cheese producer Alsop & Walker, who are entered in the Sussex Food Producer of the Year category, Crowborough-based gin producer Tom Cat Gin, finalist in the Sussex Drink Producer of the Year and the Perry Hill Farm Shop, finalist in the Sussex Food Shop of the Year.

The Forest Row Village Market feature in the Farmers’ Market of the Year category. There are two finalists in the Sussex Eating Experience category: The Rathfinney Tasting Room and Wingrove House- both are in Alfriston.

The public are invited to take part in the online vote by going to www.sussexfoodawards.biz. The closing date for voting is 17 January, 2019.

All ten categories will be invited to attend the award ceremony on 15 May 2019 at the Amex Stadium in Brighton, where the winners will be revealed.
