There are 23 events taking place across Wealden including dementia friends sessions, accessible swimming, legal and financial planning, film screenings and games sessions.
The Fortnight begins on Saturday 12 May with a tea party, including cream teas and musical activities between 2-4pm at the Victoria Pavilion, Uckfield.
“Since we launched the Wealden Dementia Action Alliance two years ago, we have seen the treatment of dementia in the wider community move up the agenda both nationally and locally,” said Councillor Claire Dowling, Cabinet member for Public Health and Community Safety. “We now have not just one week but two weeks of events encouraging active participation and raising awareness. If dementia affects you, your family or your friends, and you have not yet become involved, I urge you to take the opportunities provided by Dementia Awareness Fortnight to do so. There is so much to gain.”
There are now Local Dementia Forums in Uckfield and Polegate and it is hoped that a Forum will be set up in Crowborough shortly.
Protecting yourself and your loved ones from online fraud is a new area of concern, particularly as you get older. Friends Against Scams are holding two awareness sessions during the Fortnight, on Thursday 17 May at The Queensmead, Victoria Road, Polegate, from 2.30 – 3.30pm; and on Tuesday 22 May at Heather View, Beacon Road, Crowborough from 2pm to 3pm. These free events help you find out more about scams and how you can protect yourself and others from becoming a victim.
Two Dementia Clinical Friends Sessions are being held on Thursday 17 May at Bowes House, Hailsham, from 10-11.30am and 2- 4 pm. Planning for the Future - which looks at funding, long term care and legal implications – will be discussed in detail at Heather View, Beacon Road, Crowborough on Tuesday 15 May from 2pm – 4pm and a Financial Advice Session will begin at 1.45pm on Wednesday 23 May at the Luxfords Centre, Uckfield.
Throughout the Fortnight there will be accessible swim sessions: Crowborough Leisure Centre -Tuesday 15 and Tuesday 22 May; Uckfield Leisure Centre -Tuesday 15 and Tuesday 22 May and Hailsham Leisure Centre –Friday 18 May and Friday 25 May.
The Dementia Awareness Fortnight closes on Saturday 2 June with a morning of Top 20 Memory Tunes provided by Hailsham FM.
