Wealden agrees below inflation Council Tax increase

Media Release : 21 February 2018

Wealden District Council has approved a £5 a year increase for its share of the Council Tax bill. This is less than 10 pence extra a week for an average Band D property for all the District Council’s services.

These include refuse and recycling, social housing, planning enforcement, public health, animal welfare, economic development, community grants, taxi and alcohol licencing, private housing support, leisure centres and environmental protection.

The total weekly payment for all of Wealden’s services for a Band D property is £3.60 a week.

"Over the past year, we have embarked on a commercial strategy which will create new public facilities, more housing opportunities and help regenerate our main towns," said Council Leader Bob Standley. "It will help to compensate for the loss of Central Government funding, and keep Council Tax rises as low as possible in the future. We will continue to strive to maintain a high standard of services while reducing costs."

The Wealden Council Tax increase is below the current rate of consumer inflation.

For the first time this coming year, Wealden District Council will not receive any Revenue Support Grant from the Government. Three years ago, these grants provided £2.3 million towards the cost of the Council finances.

The annual increase for Wealden council tax property bands is as follows:

  • Band A - £3.33
  • Band B - £3.89
  • Band C - £4.44
  • Band D - £5.00
  • Band E - £6.11
  • Band F - £7.22
  • Band G - £8.33
  • Band H - £10.00
