The scheme will provides patients and their carers a round trip to the following surgeries in the south of the District:

  • Bridgeside Surgery, Western Road.
  • Seaforth Farm Surgery, Vicarage Lane.
  • Vicarage Field Surgery.
  • Quintin Medical Centre, Hawkswood Road.
  • The Herstmonceux Integrative Health Centre, Herstmonceux.

There is a fixed charge of £5 per trip. The first Access2Healthcare scheme began in Uckfield in 2014, providing patient transport to the Bird in Eye Surgery and the Medical Centres at East Hoathly, Buxted and Meads. It is now serving 1,000 people.
The Wealden Bus Alliance, the community interest company which operates the scheme, is looking for more volunteer drivers to help provide the service to Hailsham and Herstmonceux residents.

“In Uckfield, we began with two volunteer drivers. We now have 12,” said Councillor Barry Marlowe, chairman of the Wealden Bus Alliance. “We are hoping to find the same levels of enthusiasm from drivers in the south of Wealden.

“Our part-time drivers are paid mileage and can choose their own hours. All journey requests are handled through a central booking office. Volunteer drivers usually have a preferred day.  They will be given at least 24 hours’ notice to decide if they want to accept a job, so there is plenty of flexibility.

“Our volunteer drivers all report a very high degree of job satisfaction.”

”Access to healthcare in rural areas like Wealden is important and District Councils want to see people live healthy and active lives for as long as possible,” said Councillor Claire Dowling Wealden Cabinet member for Public Health and Community Safety.

“Volunteer drivers can help build a resilient and caring community for everyone, as well as enjoying meeting and helping a wide range of people.”

Drivers in the Hailsham and Herstmonceux area interested in volunteering can find out more about the scheme by visiting the Access2Healthcare webpage, www.access2healthcare.org, including a short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgNG1MeGfRY&feature=youtu.be about the scheme.

The video will be screening during film performances at Hailsham cinema.
The Access2Healthcare scheme is open to everyone who attends the participating surgeries and operates Monday to Fridays. Patients with appointments looking to arrange a lift should telephone 01273 517332 between 8am and 4pm.

The scheme is fully insured and drivers have been checked by the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).
The scheme is supported by Wealden District Council.
